As far as nitrogen policy is concerned, the agricultural sector must be lumped together with the other sectors in the Netherlands. That is the fairest and only effective way to really tackle the problem. This is what Lubbert van Dellen, director of food & agri at Accon avm says in a conversation with Klaas van der Horst in the podcast Nitrogen Dialogues of Boerenbusiness.
Van Dellen wrote this week a fire letter about the nitrogen problem to the ministers Christianne van der Wal (Nature and Nitrogen) and Henk Staghouwer (LNV), together with emeritus professor Rudy Rabbinge† With their vision, both are in line with what nitrogen activist Johan Vollenbroek of MOB argues on this point.
By treating the sector equally, a fairer and more equal treatment is created and agriculture no longer has to fight against nitrogen emissions with its hands behind its back, says Van Dellen. At present, the sector is not allowed to tackle nitrogen emissions using the best available techniques. The sector is forced to do it with outdated methods. He also believes that for an effective approach to the nitrogen problem, the Netherlands should focus more on what is happening in neighboring countries. Now, according to Van Dellen, the Netherlands is closing itself off too much.
