Due to the dry weather of the last few weeks, several participants of the Boerenbusiness Roughage Tour already used the irrigation reels to irrigate their grassland and keep the growth in it.
The freshly sown plot in Zeewolde (Flevoland) has already been irrigated this week. The participating livestock farmer reports to have irrigated 25 millimeters. This was much needed, because the ground is very dry and as hard as concrete and otherwise the grass has too little moisture to make a good start. Even on the plots where there was grass last year, a shower of rain is not a bad thing.
Fresh grass
On the grassland plots of the participating livestock farmer from Overloon (North Brabant), the irrigation reel was already started on 11 April and the grass has started to be irrigated to maintain growth. The photos supplied by the participant clearly show that the irrigation has been useful, the grass has grown and has a good colour. This plot has been used for mowing grass for summer stable feeding.
Reel is ready
In Doetinchem (Gelderland), about 1,5 millimeters of rain fell on the participants' plots there last Saturday. This amount is not enough for the grass to really grow, so he has his reel ready if needed. The participant may take the water for irrigation from the Oude IJssel as long as it takes.
