For a number of participants of the Roughage Tour, the fodder beets sprouted and emerged above the ground, about 9 to 10 days after they were sown. A maize plot from the Roughage Tour is also starting to germinate.
Participating livestock farmers Newerkerk (Zeeland) and Sint-Oedenrode (North Brabant) were the first to report that the fodder beets had risen above the ground. The participant from Sint-Oedenrode says that his Rialto fodder beets appeared above the ground 9 days after sowing and that fortunately the soil still contains moisture.
Lice are present
According to Antoon Verhoeven, roughage specialist at Limagrain, the first aphids have already been spotted on young fodder beets in the vicinity of Haaren (North Brabant). The beets are only just above the ground, but they are already covered in aphids, these aphids can cause a lot of damage. For this reason, according to Verhoeven, it is important to take control seriously and to start on time to prevent serious damage.
Corn is already sprouting
After taking the fresh grass samples from the participant Jelsum (Friesland) the plot with silage maize, which at that time had been in the ground for only two days, was also examined. After a bit of searching in the ground, it turned out that some of the seeds already showed a sign of life and were in the first stage of germination.
