In the spring of 2020 it was very sunny and the country became increasingly drier. This has changed again since April 28 and some precipitation has fallen. There are large differences between the plots of the Roughage Tour.
Livestock farmers of the Roughage Tour report the number of millimeters that have fallen on various plots in recent days. These results were very different. No less than 8 millimeters fell in Aartswoud (North Holland) on Tuesday, while only 1 millimeter fell in Udenhout (North Brabant). On average, about 3,9 millimeters of rainfall has ended up on plots of various participating livestock farmers.
Place plot | Number of millimeters |
Arch forest | 8 millimeter |
Doetinchem | 3 millimeter |
Newerkerk | 5 millimeter |
Overloon | 4,5 millimeter |
Sint-Oedenrode | 4 millimeter |
Udenhout | 1 millimeter |
Zeewolde | 4 millimeter |
Zuidbroek | 2 millimeter |
Benefits
Antoon Verhoeven, roughage specialist at Limagrain, also noticed the precipitation in various regions. "The precipitation is very pleasant. The plots that still have to be prepared for sowing are in better condition. The emerging crop can take a breather, from the heat and drought of recent times. Some plots of grass did not grow well. The developments of this grass will improve. In addition, it is also very beneficial for the mowed lawns, where the fertilizer can now be absorbed better."
Expectations
The forecasts are favourable. The KNMI predicts that the rainfall will continue in the coming days. The weather institute also expects this to remain the case in the long term. The weather type will be different from the past few weeks. "Hopefully this rain will continue a bit, because the agricultural land was drying out," said Verhoeven.
