Roughage tour Week 19

Fertilizing plots after the first grass cut

5 May 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

Even before the precipitation fell on April 28, several livestock farmers in the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour mowed the first grass cut. Manure has already been applied on some plots.

This week we see various activities on the 10 participating plots of the Roughage Tour. Three participants have already fertilized their plots, where other participating livestock farmers will mow again in the coming weeks.

Spreading fertilizer
One of the plots is located in Newerkerk (Zealand). The first grass cut was cut here on 24 April. The following days they immediately started spreading fertilizer, mixing water with the manure  and then fertilizing. Also in Zuidbroek (Groningen) and Udenhout (North Brabant) the plots have been fertilized. In Udenhout, everything was ensiled on 25 April and the following days fertilizer was spread and manure was injected. Just in time for the rain. “The grass is starting to get pretty green now,†said the participant.

Rainfall
In recent days, after weeks of drought, rain has fallen all over the country. The number of millimeters on the various plots does not differ much and is in most places between 11 and 14 millimeters. The highlight is Zeewolde, where 24 millimeters have fallen. Although the livestock farmers are happy with the precipitation, according to the participants it is still far from enough. “At the moment it is drops on hot plates,†said one participant. Another participant follows “we miss water†.
