After the grass, many livestock farmers are of the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour now also busy with the corn. However, the differences are large. In many places, the maize has already germinated and emerged on a single plot. Drought in particular plays a major role.
In Overloon, the first seeds started to germinate on April 29. Here the variety LG 22 was sown on April 31.218† They are now also starting to grow on the other plots of the Roughage Tour 2020. “They will be above it today or tomorrow”, according to the participating cattle farmer from Beerzerveld (Overijssel). While the maize is already above the ground on some plots, in Nieuwerkerk it was only sown on 4 May.
Differences in growth
Differences can be seen on the plots in the Roughage Tour 2020, where the seed already germinates on one plot, little is happening on the other plot. One plot is drier than the other. This is also clearly visible in the photos. On the clay soil in Zuidbroek (Groningen), it can be seen that the seeds are not yet ready to germinate. The ground here is very dry. According to the participant from Groningen, the plot could still use a rain shower. To date, 10 millimeters have fallen here.
In Aartswoud (North Holland), on the other hand, the maize has already come out of the ground. Here, the participating livestock farmer sowed 21 hectares of LG Asgaard on April 12. Enough rain has fallen here, so that the soil was moist enough to allow germination. In week 18, this was about 26 millimeters.
weed spraying
In Groningen, measures are being taken to retain the water as much as possible. They sprayed against weeds on the plot in Zuidbroek on 5 May. “Then the plots are in any case clean and the weeds cannot pull the moisture out of the ground,” says the farmer.
