The drought has gripped our country and the growers of the Boerenbusiness Roughage tours indicate that a heavy shower of rain is more than welcome. The state of the maize in week 22 shows a varying picture on the 10 plots.
Every week keeps Boerenbusiness the latest state of affairs on the maize fields. The participant in Zuidbroek, Groningen, says that the maize is not looking good this week. Last week he saw about 50% turnout. "It's not easy, but not too bad either. The rest will come, but it needs some rain first. We can't escape the duality", he concludes.
The maize in Udenhout was sown on April 20 and is ahead of the other plots in length. This week the crop is about 34 centimeters.
In Nieuwerkerk (Zeeland), the participant speaks of a good turnout. The plot was sown on 4 May and few maize plants have fallen away. The growth is good, the maize has reached the 4-leaf stage this week.
On May 29, the plots are sprayed against weeds, and foliar fertilization is also done at the same time. There is no irrigation yet, the drought should just not last another week, the cattle farmer said.
Sowing was done on 7 and 8 May in Zeewolde (Flevoland). At the end of last week, the first maize appeared on this plot. About 75 percent of the crop is already grown above.
It is also dry on the maize plot in Sint Oedenrode in Brabant. The maize went into the ground here on April 29. Last weekend, 4 millimeters of precipitation fell there, a drop in the ocean. "I am irrigating the grass in full and it is still growing nicely, but I doubt whether I should start irrigating the maize as well," said the participant.
