Roughage tour Week 28

Maize silage starts cob setting

11 July 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

In the past week, the maize on most of the parcels of the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour passed the two meters. On two plots in the south, the spike enters the plant and small cobs can already be seen.

The spike in the maize plant is already clearly visible on the plots in Udenhout and Sint-Oedenrode. The participant from Sint-Oedenrode shows in photos that the flask is already starting to develop.

Two meter border
On most plots, the limit of two meters has now been reached and exceeded. On the plots in the south it can be seen that the maize continues to grow after this limit and then begins to ripen. the corn then shoots into the ear and begins to set the cob.

Growth is slowing
The table below shows that the maize plants did not grow much longer this week compared to last week. This also shows that the plants are starting to reach their maximum length and that the focus of the plant is starting to shift towards setting the cobs. On the plot in Zeewolde, the growth is now continuing well, the participant who owns the plot hopes that the maize will continue to grow and not shoot too early.
