Roughage tour Week 37

This is how much dry matter the plots of silage maize have

7 September 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The silage maize in the south of the country is much riper than in the center and north of the Netherlands. The maize is almost ready for harvest on many plots in the south, so that the choppers can get to work there during the week. This can be deduced from the results of the first samples of the maize fields from the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour.

Jos Groot Koerkamp, commercial manager livestock farming at Limagrain Netherlands, concludes after looking at the results that the silage maize in the south is almost ready for harvest. For agricultural entrepreneurs, the plot is ideal for harvesting during this period, notes Groot Koerkamp. When the forage harvester is off the land, they can sow another catch crop or pasture mixture. The maize harvest in the middle of the country seems to have to wait another 2 weeks. "And in the north of the country it takes a little longer," says Groot Koerkamp.

The maxim for maturing the maize under normal circumstances is 1% dry matter per 3 days. So it is now very important to keep an eye on the maturation of the cob and the health of the plant. The current weather forecast is based on dry weather with temperatures of 20 degrees during the day and around 10 degrees at night. Under these conditions, the maize ripens faster than expected.

A tool for determining the percentage of dry matter in the maize is the Corn manager app from Limagrain, which can be downloaded from the Apple Store or Google Play and also works offline.
