At Frank Rooker, dairy farmer in Aartswoud (NH), the maize was sown on Monday 26 April, making it the first parcel in the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour.
The soil temperature touched 10 degrees and because of the expected rain it was decided to sow the maize. The Asgaard maize variety was sown with 90.000 seeds per hectare in combination with 150 kilos of Entec fertilizer. “Meanwhile, the seed has engorged itself with moisture. The germination rate depends on the temperature, hopefully it will get warmer and the plant will be above the ground in three weeks. If not, losses will occur," says Ludwig Oevermans, forage specialist in the Northeast Netherlands of Limagrain.
Wim Bos from Zuidbroek (Groningen) has postponed sowing the maize for another week, in the hope that the soil temperature will rise a bit. Jan Dirk Ubbels from Jelsum (Friesland) was busy last Monday with the last operations for the maize country. Today, April 28, the maize is sown by the agricultural contractor.
