Roughage tour Grass - week 19

These are fresh grass analyzes of the first cut

13 May 2021 - Erik van der Deure

The first cut was made at the dairy farmers participating in the Roughage Tour and the fresh grass samples were analysed. The results are presented below and the details are further explained.

With a mowing cut of around 4 tons of dry matter, the first cut is characterized as an excellent cut. The sugar content has come back a bit in recent days, because the cold nights are over. The grass has grown rapidly in recent days, which means an increase in the NDF and the cell walls.

The crop of Frank Rooker from Aartswoud has a high protein content with excellent nutritional values. The red clover in the Havera 4 mixture has contributed well to this. This same mixture, only without clover, has also achieved good nutritional values for Bert Wissels in Hengelo (Gld.) with a high proportion of sugar.

Jan Henk Waterink from Beezerveld (Ov.) made a big cut with more than 4 tons of dry matter and, despite the mass, excellent nutritional values. Roel Assies from Zeewolde has younger grass and a somewhat lighter cut because of the summer stable feeding. Typical of the higher protein content, in combination with a lower sugar content, the difference in grass mixtures with and without clover is clearly visible at Silvain Kusters in Guttecoven.
