Despite the fact that the night frost is behind us, it is anything but pleasant for the corn plant. The dark green color still remains and the crop is still on the yellowish side when it emerges.
Due to the recent cold and wet periods, maize still has to be sown in a number of places in the country. Where previously waiting for warm periods was the main reason for postponing sowing, the fields are now passable as an issue.
In the meantime, it is really time to start sowing, according to Antoon Verhoeven, roughage specialist in the Southwest Netherlands of Limagrain. "I am more concerned about the maize that has yet to be sown than about the maize that is already above," adds Verhoeven.
Growth development in view
All maize fields of the Boerenbusiness Roughage tours have already been sown. At Hans Schoenmakers (North Brabant) and Frank Rooker (North Holland) the maize is already well above the ground. With the other participants the seed starts to germinate, this is shown together with the sowing date in the image above.
Last year's temperatures around this time were much higher. Where it now struggles to rise above 15 degrees during the day. The temperatures in mid-May 2020 were well above 20 degrees. The difference with last year can therefore be clearly seen in the image above, which shows the growth of the maize plant from week 21 in 2020.
