Roughage tour Week 24

Rain showers come when called

June 18, 2021 - Erik van der Deure

After a wet and cold spring, the longing for warm weather was great. That feeling has changed quickly after the past few days. The predicted showers that lie ahead are therefore just about right.

The first reels have been spotted on the grass and maize plots in drought-sensitive areas in the Netherlands. This also applies to the Brabant dairy farmer Joost van Nostrum from Sint-Oedenrode. The facilities for irrigation are favorable at Van Nostrum and can therefore respond easily and quickly. ''The entire house plot has now been irrigated once with a 1 millimeters'', adds van Nostrum.

For the other participants of the Boerenbusiness Roughage Tour is not yet applicable, but for Hans Schoenmakers from Udenhout, among others, the drought should not have lasted much longer. The rain shower of last night (13,5 millimeters) was therefore more than welcome.

Large rainfall spread
While the west side of the country had to deal with nice showers last night, the only hope for the east is a little rain. The Easterners got no further than a few drops and a dark sky on Friday.

Rain is favorable for corn
The fact that the weather is fertile due to the heat, moisture and nutrients is beyond doubt. The maize bulks out of the ground here and there. This is clearly reflected in the maize plot at dairy farmer Silvain Kusters from Guttecoven (Limburg). The corn plant changes hard in a few days and has a healthy color on it. The plant is now well over half a meter and with the rain showers ahead, the smooth growth will only increase.
