The weather in Limburg does not seem normal in recent weeks with the heavy rain showers. Where the plots and the company of the Limburg dairy farmer Silvain Kusters were previously skipped, he has had enough rain lately.
The desire for steady summer weather for mowing the third cut is therefore great.
To date, the most extreme showers have not yet fallen on Kusters, the Lumburg participant in the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour, but he's done with the rain. "I would have liked to mow the third cut this week and it is ready. Only the weather thinks differently," says Silvain Kusters. Although there has been enough rain, the plots are still passable. The loess soil of Kusters can take quite a bit and there is therefore no question of damage for the time being.
It is a different story for the fruit crops around Kusters. "In the area, entire barley and wheat fields have been flattened by the rain and wind of the past few days. I can therefore pinch myself that my maize is still standing," adds Kusters. Another 50 millimeters is planned for tomorrow in Limburg and from then on the weather should improve. Kusters therefore first let the sun come into the grass, before he mows off the 3rd cut.
Spread again large
Where a small country in the spread of rainfall can be so large, is confirmed again this year. Where the Zeeland dairy farmer Marijnissen has today cut the third cut to make hay, Kusters does not know where to look with the amount of rain.
