The violent weather in Limburg lasted a long time and caused a lot of damage. Entire dairy farms have been flooded and streets are no longer passable. The damage is not yet comprehensible and the damage is particularly extensive in South Limburg.
The worst storms have now passed for the Limburgers, but the misery is only just beginning. KNMI has changed code red to code yellow since 03:00 last night, but the damage is not yet comprehensible. The misery already starts 5 kilometers from the Limburg dairy farmer Silvain Kusters.
Namely in Geleen, where riding stables and dairy farms are completely under water. A lot of nuisance is caused by the brooks that overflow and in this case it is the Geleenbeek. The streams and rivers that normally run dry in summer now rush through cities, destroying everything in their path.
Farmers come to the rescue
For now, mainly horses are evacuated by the farmers in the neighborhood with tractors and cattle trucks. "The dairy farmers in the disaster areas are still trying to keep the cows on dry land. As far as I know they are not evacuating them yet, but the water is up to the silo so I don't know how long they will last," said Kusters.
Calls are made via various platforms to report empty stables, so that the evacuated animals can be temporarily stabled. The telephone numbers that can be called for this are red hot and stables are offered in abundance, but luckily no use has yet to be made of them.
Evacuation is difficult
In the direction of Valkenburg and Voerendaal, it is even difficult for hikers to pass. According to Kusters, the carts even started to float during the evacuation and it became difficult to get through. "The more mountains and valleys, the greater the disaster scenarios. We are 60 meters above NAP and therefore no problems here, but we see major differences in the area," adds Kusters.
More than 100mm of rain
More than 24mm of rain has fallen in the south of Limburg in the past 100 hours. As it stands, the hard-hit areas will be spared heavy rain showers for the next few hours. Code yellow now also applies to almost all of the Netherlands. Only North Holland, South Holland and Zeeland fall just outside. It can get really bad elsewhere in the country, but it won't get as bad as it is in Limburg.
