Roughage tour Corn Week 29

The first plumes visible in the maize

20 July 2021 - Erik van der Deure

The first plumes in the maize are visible in the south of the country. This virtually stops the growth in length. In general, the maize has recovered well in the past 2 weeks and the wave formation can start soon.

The plume is in the maize at the Brabant dairy farmer Joost van Nostrum from Sint-Oedenrode. Van Nostrum sown on 6 May and the maize has developed nicely in recent weeks. With a length of 2,5 meters, the length growth of the plant is now as good as finished and the spalling can begin after pollination. Sufficient sun is essential for photosynthesis to eventually form enough starch for the cob.

Ideal growing conditions
There is still no shortage of moisture in mid-July. In Brabant they have received more than 7 millimeters of rain in the past 30 days, which was more than welcome. The conditions are therefore favorable for the maize fields, namely warm days and a chance of showers towards the end of the week.

The fact that there is a lot of variation between maize fields in the Netherlands is nothing new. That is also the case for the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour participants, where a lot of spread is observed. In the north, the start of the maize took a little longer, but the maize has adjusted rapidly among the participants of the Roughage Tour in recent weeks.

The maize in the photo above was sown on April 28 and has been able to achieve good growth since week 27, when a height of 140 centimeters was measured. That is how the Frisian dairy farmer Jan Dirk Ubbels describes it. "The maize has caught up, looks fresh and you can just feel the plume," says Ubbels.
