Roughage tour Maize analysis week 36

Large outlier of dry matter in the north

10 September 2021 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The maize harvest is getting closer and closer. In order to give an indication of the development of the dry matter percentage, 1 fresh maize sample will be taken every week from the 10 participants of the Roughage Tour in the coming weeks. The plot in Zuidbroek shows a major outlier this week.

According to Jan Roothaert, product manager livestock farming at Limagrain, there is quite a lot of difference nationally in the dry matter percentage of the maize. That is quite logical, Roothaert says, in the north the percentage is lower and the south is already approaching 30%.

Surprise from the north
At Silvain Kusters' farm in Guttecoven, Limburg, the dry matter percentage is 25,8%. In the middle of the country at Roel Assies' company in Zeewolde, the dry matter percentage is 27,1%. In the northwest, Frank and Dirk Rooker's company is on the way with 23,1% dry matter. The big surprise came from Zuidbroek at Wim Bos's company. The dry matter of the maize sown on 8 May reaches a dry matter percentage of 31%. On another Bos plot, the dry matter percentage is 30%.

Plot Percentage dry matter week 36   sowing date
Arch forest 23,1%   April 25
Beerzeveld 27,2%   April 30
Zeewolde 27,1%   May 14
Udenhout 29,1%   April 22
Sint-Oedenrode   26,5%   May 6
Guttec oven 25,8%   May 8
Zuidbroek 31%   May 8
Newerkerk 28%   April 28
Hengelo 27%   April 29

Keep an eye on
It is now important to keep a close eye on the stock, warns Jan Roothaert. "At 50% cob share, for example, the plant is still fresh, but the cob is developing well, especially in the favorable weather conditions of the last few days." In these kinds of weather conditions, the maize can ripen by 1% in 2 days. When the weather becomes more changeable, with moderate temperatures and less sunshine, the ripening goes back to 1% in 3 days.

Wim Bos's maize fields show outliers. Both plots were sown on 8 May. On the left LG 31.205 with 30% ds and on the right LG EMELEEN with 31% ds.
