Roughage tour Corn analysis week 38

Maize ripening switches back a notch

25 September 2021 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The maturation of the maize shows a smaller increase in week 38 than last week, as shown by the maize analyzes of the plots participating in the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour.

With an average increase of 2% dry matter in 1 week, the content averages 34% per plot. The plot in Zeewolde shows the lowest score with 32% dry matter. It is not surprising that the highest percentages are achieved in the south. Udenhout in Brabant, Nieuwerkerk in Zeeland and Guttecoven in Limburg predominate with 36%.

Less sun and fresher
According to Limagrain, the delay in ripening is not unusual. "The slightly cloudier weather with a slightly lower temperature is to blame for this. Next week we expect that this trend, based on the current forecasts, will continue and amounts to about 1% every 3 days," says Jan Roothaert , livestock product manager at Limagrain.

Roothaert advises to keep a close eye on the maize in the coming period. "It is noticeable that the plant remains green for a long time, while the cob ripens faster. This means that it is and remains wise to regularly walk into the maize in the coming period to see how far it is."
