Roughage tour Maize analysis week 39

Maize ripening takes a big step forward

4 October 2021 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The silage maize has matured considerably further in week 39. Under the influence of the weather, 2% was added in a week, or an average of 1% every 3 days.

First the cob was ripening hard and the plant remained a bit green, now you see that the plant is also starting to ripen considerably. Jan Roothaert, product manager livestock farming at Limagrain: "It is good that the maize growers have had a delay, so that the maize can fully ripen to reach its nutritional value."

Clear differences
Clear differences can be seen between the participating plots of the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour. In Zeewolde there seems to be some influence of some rain and high humidity in combination with another green plant. This makes it seem as if the plant has not matured, but the absorption of rainwater can affect the percentage of dry matter by about 1 to 2%.

Two plots have now been harvested. The plot in Guttecoven was harvested last week and the plot in Nieuwerkerk was harvested last weekend. The other participants of the Roughage Tour also see the harvest approaching. Frank Rooker from Aartswoud says that the plant is deteriorating very fast this week. "The stock is almost ready." Jan Dirk Ubbels from Jelsum also expects it to take a good week before the maize is ripe.
