Roughage tour Photo report

Busy times in the field for dairy farmers

31 March 2022 - Ronald Smit

The growing season is starting, the days are getting longer and the dairy farmers have started their spring work. Not only has a lot happened on the land in the past week, the cows of a number of participants were also allowed to walk outside for the first time this year. In this photo report some activities of the participants of the Roughage Tour are listed.

On March 17, Robert Welhuis from Wapse announced that the contractor had started with the spoked wheel injector. The fertilizer that is spread is Anasol. Robert also states that he has been applying his fertilizer in this way for five years now.
On March 19, Frank Rooker from Aartswoud (NH) shares a photo that the cows are allowed outside for the first time. Frank says about this: "In recent years we have started grazing earlier and earlier. It is at its best at this time of year. Temperature is great, the grass is tasty and it is now nicely dry. keep the cows indoors for a while when the conditions are less."
Besides the fact that Rooker's cows were allowed to go outside, Bert Wissels from Hengelo (GLD) also announced that he would soon take his cows outside. The cows will also go outside soon at Joost van Nostrum in Sint-Oedenrode (NB).
On March 25th, Sander Vijverberg will share a photo of the fertilizer spreading
Joost van Nostrum from Sint-Oedenrode (NB) announces that the 2021 maize will start on the same day.
On March 22, Silvain Kusters from Guttecoven (L) shares this photo in which he measures the grass height with the measuring stick. That day the forecast was dry, sun and 21 degrees so the grass will continue to grow. Silvain plans to completely mow the first cut before the cows go outside.
Also on March 22, Roel Assies from Zeewolde (FL) shares a photo of the fertilization on his newly sown grassland. "This afternoon fertilizer was applied on newly sown land. Normally we only spread fertilizer for the first cut, but due to the beautiful dry conditions we could now also apply fertilizer". Roel also explains: "A fertilization trial is also being set up on this plot in collaboration with VVB Flevoland. Fertilization is done in the trial field with a spoked wheel slurry injector. Discharge water from the Lely Sphere is compared with liquid fertilizer."
On March 23, Sander Vijverberg from Strijen shares a photo of the drag hose injector of the contractor who is already fertilizing the arable land. "The manure on maize land is ideal given the circumstances".
On March 24, the summer field beans of Sander Vijverberg from Strijen will start to germinate.
The winter field beans of the Tundra variety from Limagrain also look good.
Silvain Kusters is spreading his rough muck over the arable land the same day. It is then incorporated with the disc harrow and with it also the green manure, which is then destroyed.
On March 29, Kusters will share this beautiful picture of fertilizer spreading early in the morning. This is the second fertilizer dose of 100 kilograms of CAN. As Silvain himself says: "Morning has gold in its mouth, certainly with these prices for fertilizers".
Robert Welhuis announced on March 29 that his summer field beans are also coming up together with the weeds. These are addressed by the contractor the next day.
