Roughage tour Grass - Week 19

Flashy numbers for protein and VEM in grass analyses

13 May 2022 - Ruben van der Maas

Now that most of the first cut has been completed in many places in the country, the latest fresh grass analyzes are known for the grassland plots of the dairy farmers participating in the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour† Sometimes flashy numbers, with protein jumping out in some cases.

At Joost van Nostrum from Sint-Oedenrode (NH), mowing was done on Wednesday 4 May, after which chopping was done on Friday 6 May. Jan Dirk Ubbels from Jelsum (Fr) started mowing the total 7 hectares on Saturday afternoon 60 May. The next two days he silaged. Bert Wissels from Hengelo (Gl) mowed on Monday 9 May, with the grass being ensiled on Wednesday 11 May. Jan Henk Waterink from Breezerveld (OV) mowed on Tuesday 10 May.

The pitting is in full swing Jan Dirk Ubbels.

Below in the table are the values of the analyses:

Robert Welhuis Wapse (Dr.) Joost van Nostrum,
St.Oedenrode(NB)
Jan Henk Waterink Breezerveld (OV) Bert Wissels Hengelo (GL) Jan Dirk Ubbels Jelsum(Fr)
Dry matter 23.9 23.4 22.7 18.3 20.4
WHO 988.4 981.1 1014.6 931.2 984.6
Sugar 206.7 167.2 264.2 164.9 233.9
NDF 474.6 466.9 438.9 494.3 439.7
Protein 138.4 170.7 119.2 130.9 130.1
raw ash 84.6 91.6 80.9 93.4 85.4

Difference From Nostrum
As the analyzes of the grass samples indicate, these are good numbers for dairy farmers. Generally with a lot of sugar, a proper VEM and low raw ash. The sunny days and cold nights at the same time are just like in the previous analysis due to the high sugar content. What is striking between the analyzes is the protein and sugar content at Van Nostrum. The protein content is relatively high at 170 compared to the other analyses, while sugar is lower again at 167.2. Van Nostrum himself says that he thinks it is a good result with which he is satisfied. However, he cannot explain the difference with the other analyses. At Wissels, the VEM shows a significantly lower number of 931.2. This can be explained by the presence of more red clover with thick stems in the field. The grass analyzes also show figures that the dairy farmers are satisfied with.
