Roughage tour Grass - Week 23

Good second cut of grass is apparent from figures

June 8, 2022 - Ruben van der Maas

Many dairy farmers have harvested the second cut of grass on their plots in the past week. The sunny and relatively warm days were excellent for this. The dairy farmers who participate in the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour have also mowed the necessary hectares. What about the feed values of the second cut?

In Sint-Oedenrode in Brabant, Joost van Nostrum had the second cut of grass mowed on 1 June, just like with fellow provincial Hans Schoenmakers in Udenhout. At Roel Assies in Zeewolde (FL), the second cut of grass was mowed on 2 June. Assies indicates that there is a nice cut of grass on the first-year grassland, but that the yields are somewhat lower on second-year grassland.

Below are the results of the fresh grass analysis.

Hans Schoenmakers in Udenhout (NB) Joost van Nostrum in Sint-Oedenrode (NB) Roel Assies in Zeewolde (FL)
Dry matter 19.8 19 20
WHO 939.9 946.2 950
Sugar 149.2 149.3 146
NDF 529 486.3 512
Protein 132.6 147.8 143
raw ash 96.8 87.1 91

Neat neat cut grass
Jan Roothaert, livestock product manager at Limagrain, indicates that these are good fresh grass samples for this time of year. The samples show no particularities and give a good picture of the second cut of grass. Sugar and protein are present in the right amount, but NDF also shows neat figures. What is striking is that the samples are fairly even. This has to do with the rural influence of the weather: almost all grown and harvested under the same conditions. In summary, a neat neat cut of grass.

Below is the silage combination of Roel Assies. At Assies, the entire grass harvest is done in-house. In addition to silage, the loader wagon is also used for summer stable feeding.
