The growth of the field beans has been rapid in the past period. The pods are now clearly visible and the crop becomes quite a massive package. Two participants of the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour have also filled in a piece of acreage with field beans. How are things going so far?
At Robert Welhuis in Wapse (Dr.) a plot has been set up for the cultivation of summer field beans. Welhuis says that the crop is 'extremely massive and varies in height between 170 and 185 centimetres. The chocolate spot disease was still controlled in the crop on Tuesday 21 June. The disease causes brown spots on the leaf, which reduces photosynthesis.
Below in the image the pods in the crop. The crop looks good, but Welhuis indicates that the summer field beans need water so as not to hinder development.
Massive crop
Sander Vijverberg from Strijen (ZH) has both summer and winter field beans in the area. The difference in growth is now clearly visible through the amount of pods. This is also where the biggest difference lies in the final yield. Vijverberg also calls the field beans massive and therefore well-developed. He estimates the height of the crop at about 130 centimeters (image 3).
