Roughage tour Corn - Week 27

Explosive growth and development of silage maize

5 July 2022 - Ruben van der Maas

Due to the warm weather and the regular precipitation of the past period, the silage maize is growing explosively. A crop height of more than two meters is no longer an exception. What is the state of the maize among the participants in the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour?

The maize is developing very well. The high temperatures with the necessary precipitation create an almost tropical climate at times, to which corn generally responds well. A graph shows how explosively the maize has grown in height in recent weeks.

Beautiful dark green crop
The table below shows the differences in maize height of the participating plots, measured at the end of week 26 (previous week). Silvain Kusters from Guttecoven (Li) has the most developed crop in length at 250 centimeters and indicates that the first plot is already in the ear. Hans Schoenmakers is also very satisfied with the beautiful dark green color of the crop at 155 centimeters.

Participant Height in cm at the end of week 26
Silvain Kusters from Guttecoven (Li) 250
Sander Vijverberg from Strijen (ZH) 200
Hans Schoenmakers from Udenhout (NB) 155
Roel Assies from Zeewolde (FL) 140
Robert Welhuis from Wapse (Dr.) 130
Frank Rooker from Aartswoud (NH) 125
Joost van Nostrum from Sint-Oedenrode (NB) 110
Jan Dirk Ubbels from Jelsum (FR) 110
Bert Wissels from Hengelo (GD) 100

undersow
Robert Welhuis from Wapse has opted for undersowing in maize. At the moment it is developing well and the undersow is coming up nicely.

Special corn year
It is a special year for maize cultivation at Jan Dirk Ubbels in Jelsum (FR). At the beginning of June, Ubbels chose to reseed 10 of the total 22 hectares due to poor emergence due to drought and bird feeding. Sowing was done again on 3 June. This maize has emerged well and at the moment there is a crop with a height of 35 centimeters. The difference is clearly visible with the plants that were left standing after the oversowing (photo below). The 12 hectares that have not been sown are well developed and now have a height of 110 centimeters.
