The prolonged period of low rainfall and moderate temperatures cuts down on the growth of the grass. Grass growth is inhibited, the dairy farmers who participate in the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour due to the lack of moisture.
Sander Vijverberg mowed his third cut of grass in the South Holland village of Strijen on Monday 4 July. Vijverberg is very satisfied with the yield, but also admits that there are less spots in the crop. After the first cut, Vijverberg irrigated most of the acreage with grass. "It can be seen on the meter where water has been irrigated and where not," he says. Below are the representations of the nutritional values in the fresh grass.

Drought
Grass growth varies on the plots of the other participants. Silvain Kusters from Guttecoven (Li) indicates that drought is playing tricks. The grass will only grow moderately. According to Kusters, it is not due to the fertilization. He indicates that sufficient nitrogen is available, but the grass does not use it optimally due to the lack of moisture. Below is an overview of the moisture balance on the Kusters plot, according to the AgroExact weather station.
Yield very ordinary
At Joost van Nostrum in Sint-Oedenrode, swaths are mowed on Wednesday 5 July. Then chopping will take place on Thursday 6 July. Van Nostrum says that he finds the yield very ordinary.
Hans Schoenmakers from Udenhout (NB) also indicates that the grass does not want to grow well. Schoenmakers expects to mow everything off by the end of the week, so that the new cut can hopefully develop properly. At Bert Wissels from Hengelo (GD), the growth on the grassland plot is also not easy and the drought is also the cause.
