Roughage tour Irrigation - Week 28

Dairy farmers also started raining

12 July 2022 - Ruben van der Maas

The persistent dry period leads to critical decisions on the grass plots of the participants of the roughage tour. Corn fields are also experiencing drought. Should it be irrigated or not?

Sander Vijverberg in Strijen (South Holland) started irrigating his grassland on Saturday 9 July. Before both slurry and fertilizer were applied to 20 hectares of grassland. A total of 15 cubic meters of slurry was mixed with 8 cubic meters of water and 150 kilos of greenhouse per hectare was used, after which the reel was spread over the land and another 20 millimeters of water was irrigated. On Tuesday, July 13, the same concept will be repeated on another 10-hectare grassland. on

Joost van Nostrum in Sint-Oedenrode (North Brabant) is also irrigating the grassland again. Today (July 12) the plot will be provided with 20 millimeters.

No drought symptoms in corn yet
When asked whether the maize might already have a lack of moisture, all participants of the roughage tour are still fairly unresponsive. Roel Assies from Zeewolde (Flevoland) and Hans Schoenmakers from Udenhout (North Brabant) indicate that they do not think it is necessary yet. Joost van Nostrum thinks differently about this. If you look at the crop, there are no signs of drought yet, but the soil is very dry. Van Nostrum expects to start irrigating next weekend to prevent drought damage in the maize. He wants to create optimal conditions for the upcoming flask setting.
