Roughage tour Irrigation - Week 29

Dairy farmers can't ignore irrigation

20 July 2022 - Ruben van der Maas

The dairy farmers of the roughage tour are steadily irrigating the crops. The hope is that Mother Nature will help a little on Thursday, but they clearly cannot avoid watering.

At Joost van Nostrum in Sint-Oedenrode (North Brabant), the crops need serious moisture. After he had irrigated all his acreage of grass last week, the maize was irrigated last weekend, after which Van Nostrum started irrigating the fodder beets at the beginning of this week. The image clearly shows that moisture is much needed.

Started irrigating
Robert Welhuis from Wapse (Drenthe) also started irrigating his fodder beets on Monday 18 July. Welhuis indicates that there is considerable drought in places, so that he could no longer irrigate. Below in the image the Welhuis rain reel in operation.

Satisfied after irrigation
After fertilization had taken place after mowing the third cut, the rain reel was switched on at Sander Vijverberg from Strijen (South Holland). Vijverberg is satisfied with the current acreage of grass, despite the dry and warm conditions. Vijverberg also hopes for extra water on Wednesday. Below is a view of the grassland as it stands now.
