Roughage tour Weather - week 36

Long-hoped-for rain is here, but in time for roughage?

8 September 2022 - Manon van der Meer

After a long period of drought and heat, quite a bit of rain has fallen on the plots of the in the past three days Boerenbusiness Roughage tour. The precipitation brings the grass back to life for a nice cut, but comes too late for many maize fields.

Several regions have had little rainfall this growing season, which is also reflected in the grass extraction. For example, in Guttecoven (Limburg) it has been dry for almost the entire season. This time the region was not skipped and 22 millimeters of rain has fallen in recent days. Silvain Kuster has only been able to mow his third lean cut and hopes for a good fourth cut because of this rainfall. It will not lie on the grass: the turf is greener than the entire season due to the rain shower last week. "It can definitely turn into a nice cut, especially with enough protein." Kusters also hopes that the fertilizer will finally do the job.

With Sander Vijverberg in Strijen (South Holland) the showers were also desirable to rain the newly sown grass seed. "I would have preferred the showers more spread out than 40 millimeters in one go". In total, 41,8 mm of rain fell, which unfortunately means that the ground is now a little closer than hoped. Jan Henk Waterink from Beerzerveld (Overijssel) was unfortunately skipped this time and only got 1 mm in his rain gauge. For him, the hope is that there will be some more this week. The precipitation in the table below fell until 8 a.m. on Thursday, September 11.

Location Precipitation in millimeters
Beerzerveld (Overijssel) 1
Zeewolde (Flevoland) 30
Gutte oven (Limburg)  22
Wapse (Drenthe) 29,4
Hengelo (Gelderland)  17
Sint-Oedenrode (North Brabant) 13,8
Strijen (South Holland)  41,8
Udenhout (North Brabant)  18

Precipitation does not affect maize chopping
Precipitation was certainly desirable for the grassland, but unfortunately it came too late for maize. The dry matter percentages have increased enormously in the past week, as a result of which the plots have already been chopped at some dairy farmers and the maize is not nearly ready for harvest at others. That's how the corn is Joost van Nostrum from Sint-Oedenrode (North Brabant) according to the data program Agrility of Limagrain, almost ready for harvest. The maize will be chopped early next week, is now the plan. According to Van Nostrum, the 13,8 mm of precipitation has not changed the situation for the maize.
