Roughage tour Corn - Week 44

New corn means more milk in the tank

4 November 2022 - Manon van der Meer

The first maize pits among the participants in the Boerenbusiness Roughage tours are already being fed and the maize analyzes are slowly trickling in. Unfortunately, the analyzes reflect this year's drought well. Feeding the maize, on the other hand, is going well.

Sander Vijverberg from Strijen (South Holland) has chosen to sow three different varieties of maize this year. He took fresh samples of all maize varieties during the chopping process. Vijverberg had chosen to sow the following varieties: Genialis, Gwendoleen and LG 31.245. This shows that Gwendoleen with a DM of 39,72 is a lot drier than the other varieties. The sugar content is also disappointing with only 9, compared to the 32 and 37 of the other maize varieties.

When looking at the maize analysis of the silage of all varieties together, it can be seen that the silage is very resistant. Striking are a low starch and VEM. As Vijverberg himself says: "If you ask me, it is not a topper on paper, but he performs very well". For example, the dairy farmer indicates that - without changing other things - the cows have started to give more milk since feeding the new maize. About one liter per cow per day.

Also with Jan Henk Waterink from Breezerveld, the maize sample from the first silage of maize, which was harvested on September 9, has been received. "Just at the right time", as Waterink himself says. Despite the fact that the maize has a high dry matter content, the herd milks it all too well at Waterink. "The digestibility of the maize is high, I no longer come across maize kernels in the manure". Waterink also indicates that this may be because the grain crusher of the chopper has been set differently this year. Nevertheless, he is certainly satisfied with the 33 to 34 liters that the cows give per animal every day. He is also pleased with the levels that have increased again after last summer.
