Roughage tour Week 12

Fertilizer spreaders pressure on grassland plots

24 March 2021 - Erik van der Deure

With the rising temperatures in prospect, the dairy farmers who participate in the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour with the first fertilizer applications.

Where many participants normally divide the fertilizer over 2 applications, this is different this year. Due to the rain and cold of the past few weeks, the spreading is a bit later. For a number of participants, this is the reason to administer everything in one go.

So that they are not too close to mowing the first cut. ''But if the soil does not have enough nitrogen-supplying capacity, the slurry is on it and the first fertilizer application has been applied. Then you can choose to spread the second application 3 weeks before the planned mowing date. In this way you give that last grass that extra bit of protein'', says Antoon Verhoeven, roughage specialist in the Southwest Netherlands of Limagrain.
