Due to the beautiful weather, the spring activities are attracting the dairy farmers. The plots of the Roughage Tour 2021 are therefore busy. From preparing maize land to weeding harrows and from spreading fertilizer to spreading solid manure.
This year there is a lot of variation between the different types of soil and the approach of the participants. For example, in the south of the country, the second fertilizer is spread among 2 participants and we see the first fertilizer go onto the land in the north. A number of maize fields that participate in the Roughage Tour are also being prepared for sowing.
Variation between fields
The plot in Zeeland, where the first fertilizer application was spread at the beginning of March, maintains its lead with a grass height of 25 cm. Last Tuesday (week 13) the second dose was administered a 160kg KAS sulfur. "As it stands now, I hope to be able to mow the first cut in the third week of April," said Ruben Marijnissen, dairy farmer in Nieuwerkerk (Zeeland).
Today (Wednesday) 160 kg of KAS was sprinkled in the Frisian Jelsum. The plot has been fertilized with digestate from its own digester and that, in their own words, is starting to do its job well. A thick 10 cm grass height is measured on the plot.
