Ruben Marijnissen mowed the first cut of grass on Monday 26 April. Despite the fact that it is on the cold side, the Zeeland dairy farmer from Nieuwerkerk keeps a neat cut. This is the analysis of the fresh grass sample.
The first cut within the Roughage Tour is a fact. The early first fertilizer application on March 2 can contribute to the excellent first cut at Marijnissen. In addition to the fertilizer application, it is relatively warm in Zeeland compared to the Netherlands (see image below).
''With a dry matter of more than 17%, the mowing moment is well chosen and the dry weather cooperates well to guarantee the quality. Due to the growth of the grass, the protein content is somewhat diluted, which explains the low protein content. Then you expect that the sugar content is a lot higher, but there is a considerable amount of Timothy in the mixture. Then these are the figures you can count on'', says Jan Roothaert, product manager at Limagrain.
