Now that it is mainly sunny in the Netherlands, the vast majority of dairy farmers who participate in the Roughage Tour are mowing. Due to the changeable weather, it is doubtful whether part of the grass area needs to be mowed or all.
Uncertainty when using the mower is common among dairy farmers. Today (Wednesday 12 May), tomorrow or next week? In any case, the weather forecast doesn't tell us, so the farmers just gamble on it. “Last week it rained all week, but we barely had a drop. Now I'm just guessing," says Silvain Kusters, dairy farmer in Guttecoven.
Good example to follow
It is well known that dairy farmers influence each other when they start mowing. This is no different for the Roughage Tour participants. While Frank Rooker from Aartswoud gave the starting shot yesterday with mowing the first cut, now almost all participants are mowing.
