The growing weather for the maize continues and closes the fields in several places. Differences in sowing date and soil temperature are therefore clearly reflected in the growth stage of the maize.
It is no surprise that the soil temperature rises sharply after all the hot days. At the beginning of last week, Antoon Verhoeven measured a soil temperature of 27 degrees in North Brabant. "With the burning sun on the black soil every day, the temperature can rise quickly, even at a depth of 10 to 12 centimeters," said the forage specialist of Limagrain in the southwest of the Netherlands.
The participants of the Boerenbusiness Roughage tour look with satisfaction at their maize plots and take the cold start of spring with them. ''I feel that the growing season is 2 weeks behind due to the cold at the beginning of the year. If you take that into account, the maize just looks great'', adds participant Hans Schoenmakers.
Around the same period last year, the maize averaged 150 centimeters in length and this year's crop cannot yet match that. Where the maize at Hans Schoenmakers went through the meter length this week, it was almost 2 meters last year. A significant difference.
