The maize fields of the Boerenbusiness Roughage tours have recovered well in recent weeks. In the first week of July, the plots in various parts of the country still looked gloomy, but that is no longer the case.
Time flies and so do the maize fields. We have now passed the second week of July and the plume of the maize is not far away. “Last week I visited a number of maize fields in the south and I could already feel the plume at the top of the maize, says Antoon Verhoeven, forage specialist in the Southwest Netherlands of Limagrain. The maize does not grow much in length anymore, but will soon use its energy for the cob setting and with the nice weather on the way, that is a good sign.
growth spurt
The photos in the report do not give a representative picture of the Netherlands. Especially in the north and west, where the maize was sown late due to cold and too wet fields, the maize is having a hard time. Many plots long for the growth spurt that the south and east have known.
Although the silage maize has had a good growth spurt, it does not make up for the shortfall compared to last year. The 2 meters has been reached and exceeded, but last year around this time we already saw plants that almost touched the 3 meters. For example, the maize of the Brabant dairy farmer Hans Schoenmakers reached a height of 2.70 meters around the same period last year.
