Beet grower gets advice via big data

5 May 2017 - Niels van der Boom

Suiker Unie will use big data as a tool to provide beet growers with advice based on facts from the field. For this purpose, employees collect data in the field. All data together is used to improve their advice per grower and plot.

Suiker Unie has been using a program in which data is collected and stored centrally since 2012. What is new is that ICT company The Next View from Den Bosch has developed an app for beet processors that helps advisors to give individual advice. For this purpose, field observations are combined with insights from big data.

In the future, advice is possible á la minute

Geographic Location
Crop advisors use the app in the field, record data and then send that data to the so-called SAP Hana server. In this way, Suiker Unie has access to all data for each plot throughout the country. The geographical location is very important to give a more accurate advice. It is a first step for the company towards providing advice based on facts, without the guesswork, reports Computable.

Advice á la minute
'We have a limited amount of agricultural land available in the Netherlands. It must be used optimally', says Jurriaan Visser. He is project leader Agricultural Affairs at Suiker Unie. 'We help with specific advice. In the long run, perhaps even a minute.' The Next View achieved second place with the app in an innovation competition for this way of data processing.
