The Onion Today app was worked on for eighteen months. It will be introduced on 24 August during the National Onion Day in Colijnsplaat. The app makes it possible to buy and sell onions with your smartphone. To do this, the app tries to map the entire onion sector.
De app is intended for growers as well as processors and traders. All processing companies and traders are shown on a map. Growers can create a company account and offer lots. Trade can then draw on this. The idea is that an overview is immediately available of the parties that match the demand. That can be around the corner, but also a peeling shop in Poland. Contact can be made directly from the app, by telephone or via a message.
No digital trade
Onion Today does not try to handle the trade through the app, like Uienhandel.com does, for example. Buying and selling onions is human work, it is judged. The parties can be very different, which makes personal contact very important. The app is therefore intended to bring people together quickly. For example, it is possible to send a message to all affiliated accounts, within a radius of up to 200 kilometers, at the same time. Only the sender of the message can see the comments.
Free introduction
In addition to supply and sales, the app is also a gathering place for onion news from the affiliated companies and all stock exchange listings. After the introduction, the app is free to try for a month. After that, a rate of €6 per month applies. For €12 per month it is possible to offer unlimited onions and to view the range.
Farmer as inventor
The creator of the concept is the Zeeland arable farmer Wim Menu. Fellow arable farmers, onion packing stations, the Holland Onion Association and the province of Zeeland are also involved in its development. It can be downloaded from August 24 for both Apple and Android devices.
