Lemken provides field sprayer with weather data

14 November 2017 - Niels van der Boom

Lemken will provide machine users with weather data. To this end, it enters into a partnership with AppsforAgri. This company developed the FieldMate weather station, which Lemken will use and invest in. It sees opportunities in particular for spraying work.

In February of this year introduced AppsforAgri the FieldMate weather station, which markets it itself via the internet. At the Agritechnica there are 2 parties with the weather station on their stand: Case IH and Lemken. CNH, the parent company of Case IH and New Holland, has become a reseller of the AppsforAgri sensors. Dealer companies can start selling the products themselves. "Precision farming is hot. Dealers want to do something for their customers in this area. The weather station is a first step in this direction," explains Corné Braber of AppsforAgri.

Investing in sensor technology
The collaboration with Lemken goes further than that. The German machine builder is investing in the company to develop new products. Their dealers can also start selling the products. During the Agritechnica, the contract was signed by Anthony van der Ley, CEO of Lemken, and Braber. "We want the field to talk to the farmer," says Van der Ley. "That is possible with the help of sensor technology such as the FieldMate." To start with, Lemken mainly sees opportunities in spraying work.

Spray advice via weather station
In addition to the weather station, there is also a soil moisture sensor, the SoilMate. At a later date, it will also be available under the Lemken flag, as will a new digital rain gauge (RainMate), which can be mounted on top of existing weather stations. "An integration of our sensors and the machines from Lemken can be expected in the future," says Braber. "There will be a special Lemken app for the FieldMate. New in the app is the spraying advice. We use the traffic light model to indicate the ideal spraying moment and when the wind speed is favourable. Linking more weather data is of great importance. This way you know when the crop will be ready." is dry, while soil herbicide requires moist soil."

Cooperation in livestock farming
AppsforAgri has also found a partner for livestock farming. That is feed specialist Nutreco. "With this company we are going to develop sensors especially for dairy farming. These include the HayMate, which checks for hay forcing, and BarnMate, which registers the climate in the barn."

The payment and usage principle of the FieldMate remains unchanged, despite the involvement of Lemken. A weather station costs €69. In addition, you pay €19 subscription costs per month, per station. The pole remains the property of the supplier and comes with a warranty period of 3 years.

New in the FieldMate app is the spraying advice. This is a separate module.
