CEO Agco breaks with Trump

28 March 2018 - Niels van der Boom

Agco CEO Martin Richenhagen has resigned as an adviser to US President Donald Trump. That is what the German-American top man tells the newspaper 'Die Zeit'. Richenhagen has nothing good to say about Trump and his policies.

Richenhagen's words make no bones about it. "Trump surrounds himself with radicals, outsiders and spinners, i.e. madmen." It is reason enough to step down as an adviser to the president, he said in an interview known.

The reason for his departure is the policy on Africa

Africa
The immediate reason for his departure is a difference of opinion about the role of Africa. Agco has been active here for 60 years with their Massey Ferguson brand. For example, it has a training center in Zambia to train farmers and mechanics.

Under the leadership of former President Barack Obama, the advisory council promoted doing business in Africa in order to strengthen relations with the country. Richenhagen was closely involved in this. "Under Trump's leadership, it's all about how many jobs can be created in America," he said. "You can't run a global business that way."

Harsh words
The CEO is clear about Trump: "Unskilled, no knowledge of economics and environment by a very narrow circle of madmen. His message is similar to that in the media. He made his money by pulling people over the table."

Richenhagen says he is not the only adviser who has withdrawn. The mechanization man first had the idea that he and other people could bring him to different insights. He no longer believes in that.
