Agco import closed

Mechan Holding does not see dealer growth as a goal

9 April 2018 - Niels van der Boom

Mechan Holding and the importer of the Agco brands Fendt, Fella, Massey Ferguson and Valtra have reached an agreement for imports until April 1, 2024. The holding has even expanded its sales area, but further growth is not an end in itself.

Mechan Holding made Tuesday April 3 known that Agco has made a formal commitment to a new contract. This includes the brand package that Mechan Holding has already sold in the Netherlands and Belgium. Fendt continues to share it with Abemec in the Netherlands, and with Hilaire Van der Haeghe in Belgium.

Rumors have been circulating for a long time

Rumors
Stories about being an importer had been circulating for some time; especially about Fendt. BayWa, the German parent company of Fendt importer Abemec, has never denied that it also aspires to be a dealer for the Netherlands. Now it is roughly split between center and north for Mechan Group and south for Abemec.

There are exceptions to the rule. For example, Abemec has its own branch in Onderdendam in Groningen and Oudewater in Utrecht. Abemec works with its own dealer companies, while Mechan Groep mainly works with independent mechanization companies. There are also exceptions to that rule: Vohamij (Limburg) and Niestijl (Groningen).

Extension
A third company was recently added: Steenbergen Mechanisatie in Numansdorp (South Holland). "It is not a goal to get more mechanization companies into our own hands," explains marketing manager Simon Kram. "We look at it on a case-by-case basis. These are dealerships that have no successor, or are struggling to maintain and expand their market share. We have a number of large, strong partners that continue to operate independently."

Kram is also aware that there was talk in the agricultural sector about 1 central Fendt importer: "Mechan Holding also wants to become an importer for the whole of our country. The situation will remain unchanged until 2024." Contract details are yet to be discussed by Mechan Holding with Agco. The new contract runs from April 1, 2019 to April 1, 2024. Until then, the importership will not be affected. These also apply to Matermaco in Belgium.
