Topcon continues on its own in the Netherlands

16 May 2018 - Niels van der Boom

Precision farming specialist Topcon is starting its own organization in the Netherlands to support their products. It thus takes over the task of Mechan Precision Farming. The freedom this provides makes it possible to strengthen ties with other brands (including Deutz-Fahr).

Electronics manufacturer Topcon is a major player in civil engineering and civil engineering. Within the agricultural circles, the company has always maintained a relatively small position in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, Tim van der Leck, Topcon's account manager precision agriculture, believes that there is certainly room for it groei is. An independent position helps with this.

Topcon now offers brand independent support

Independent Support
Topcon and Agco (the parent company of Fendt, Massey Ferguson and Valtra) had a good marriage for many years. However, the importance of precision farming is increasing and the machine builder went his own way. For example, the latest tractor series use their own software. In contrast, Topcon found strong OEM partners in SDF (Same, Deutz-Fahr and Lamborghini) and Argo (McCormick and Landini). Topcon can provide these companies with brand independent support. According to Van der Leck, who previously joined the mechanic Group was employed, clearly demand for.

Topcon announced their vision to all dealers on Tuesday, May 15. Which means: Agco and SDF dealer companies. Dealers of other tractor brands don't actually have it. "We are not saying goodbye to the dealers," says Van der Leck. "It concerns about 18 companies that represent Agco brands. Due to the connection with the Mechan Group, the coverage in the south of the Netherlands is slightly less. SDF's national network is now added. A number of these companies are also dealer of AgLeader† We don't want to force a choice. Companies can choose themselves. The advantage is that they are familiar with the Deutz iMonitor, which consists of Topcon components."

Market share
Despite a clear increase in factory-delivered GPS systems, the company sees a clear role for itself. Van der Leck: "Integrated systems from Fendt, MF and Valtra are not interchangeable with other tractors. There are still plenty of older tractors without GPS control. The replacement market is also growing. We have, I think, interesting products in house. For example, the Apollo controller, which modernizes an older sprayer. Being an Isobus system, it works seamlessly with other brands."

The agricultural branch of Topcon can make use of the company structure that is already present in the Netherlands to support civil engineering. For this it will move in at the branch in Bunschoten (Utrecht). Topcon has its own 'retail' organization for import and support in 8 European countries.
