John Deere announces partnership with Austrian Pessl Instruments. This company develops agricultural weather stations and the software for this. Over time, their technology will be integrated into Deere's products.
Anyone interested in a weather station and collecting data using moisture sensors will soon be able to knock on the door of their John Deere dealer. To that end, Deere and Pessl have announced a global partnership. Pessl's systems will be integrated into the green-yellow giant's precision farming package called 'AMS technology'.
John Deere station disappears
In principle, it was already the case that customers could turn to John Deere for a weather station, moisture sensors and telematics. For that it has the 'Field Connect' weather pole. It has also been offered and used in the Netherlands for 2 years now. "The electronics are now getting an update, so that it can talk to Pessl's technology and software," says AMS specialist Eric Teuwsen of John Deere. "In the long run, we will switch completely to Pessl's systems."
In one fell swoop, the Austrian company has a gigantic dealer network at its disposal. It also gains access to John Deere's Operations Center. This is the software platform where you as a user manage machines, request revenue and task cards and control terminals. The collected weather data will be linked to this in the future. For example, in addition to the moisture content and yield of wheat, you also get to see the climate per plot.
Dealers
John Deere dealers will be notified of the partnership shortly. Also in the Benelux. Teuwsen does not expect mechanization companies to have any problems selling such systems. "Thanks to precision agriculture, much revolves around sensor technology. Think of our NIR sensor that is used in forage harvesters, in feed analyzes and in slurry technology."
At present, Trimble importer Vantage Agrometius is the exclusive importer of Pessl for the Netherlands and Flanders. According to marketing manager Maarten van Kampen, this will remain the case for the time being. "Pessl has an exclusive agreement only in these countries. We are in good consultation about the future. We see it as an opportunity for our company, for example in the field of support. John Deere users will soon have an extra advantage when they use a Geobas weather station We will continue to support customers who have purchased Pessl products from us."
Open approach
The collaboration fits within the policy of the world's largest machine manufacturer. For a long time it used a closed system, in which only green-yellow was tolerated. The switch has now completely turned, as Teuwsen also knows. John Deere opens up their API to third parties, enabling a link between JD's systems and others. Examples include drone services from Delair, leveling box software from T3rra 3D and the Farm Facts management program. Machine manufacturers, including Sulky, also make use of these options.
