Where does grass determine the color of the landscape?

In the Netherlands, just over half of the land used by the agricultural sector consists of grassland. The fact that the crop is not equally popular everywhere is apparent from the varying percentages of grassland between the municipalities. CBS put it all together in a new Top 5.

In total, the Netherlands has 1,76 million hectares of agricultural land. Of this, 54,1 percent consists of grassland. There is only one municipality where the entire area of agricultural land consists of grass. This is the North Holland Landsmeer. This municipality has a total of 1.135 hectares of grass.

In second place is also a municipality from North Holland. This is Wormerland with a percentage of 99,6 percent. Which represents an area of 2.459 hectares. Ameland takes third place. There, 99,1 percent of the acreage consists of grassland. Which amounts to 1.565 hectares.

The Top 5 is further completed by another municipality from North Holland, namely Ouder-Amstel (98,6 percent). This one takes fourth place. The Frisian Littenseradiel finishes in fifth place with 98,2 percent. There are 1.321 hectares and 11.362 hectares of grassland respectively.

Although these municipalities stand out because of the high percentages of grass, the largest area of grass in absolute numbers is located in Sûdwest-Fryslân. There is a total of 32.646 hectares of grass. In second place comes the Fryske Marren, where grass is grown on 22.241 hectares.
