Where does the chance of a cow in the meadow increase?

Outgoing State Secretary Martijn van Dam has again disregarded a motion to make grazing mandatory through legislation. This does not alter the fact that the sector must do everything it can to increase the percentage of grazing. It then starts with grassland. CBS shows in which municipalities the area of grass increases in percentage.

When we look at the entire Dutch acreage of grass, the Netherlands records a decrease of 3 percent between 2011 and 2016. From this it can be concluded that grass is less popular than flower bulbs† There was a significant increase in the acreage visible there. The total area of grass currently covers an area of 729.746 hectares. This means that 41 percent of all land used by agriculture consists of grass.

Despite the fact that a downward trend is seen nationally, 45 municipalities still write a plus in the percentage of grass. Groningen takes the lead. There the acreage of grass grew by 13 percent to 1.317 hectares. This means that 85 percent of the agricultural land in Groningen consists of grass. This increase was mainly due to the size of the acreage under cultivated land.

However, that does not mean that Groningen also has the largest acreage of grass in the Netherlands. That title goes to Sûdwest-Fryslân, with over 30.000 hectares of grassland. The Gelderse Beuningen follows, in percentage terms, in second place after Groningen. Here the acreage of grass increased by 11 percent to 1.313 hectares and the opportunities for grazing are also increasing. Ten Boer, municipality in Groningen, is in third place with a plus of 10 percent. The area there, with 3.166 hectares, is twice as large as in Beuningen.

Amersfoort (Utrecht) and Wormerland (North Holland) complete the top 5. As in Groningen, the percentage of grass in Amersfoort also had the opportunity to increase due to a decrease in the total area of cultivated land. There is a plus of 8 percent, which comes down to an area of 1.034 hectares. Wormerland follows with a plus of 7 percent in the percentage of grass and records 2.136 hectares.
