Last year, the Netherlands had 1.017 companies with laying hens. That is a decrease of 23 percent compared to 2011. In that year there were 1.327 companies with laying hens in the Netherlands. In which municipality did the number of farms with laying hens fall the fastest? That brings the new Top 5 of Boerenbusiness, compiled by CBS, map.
The Netherlands still counted in 2015 1.123 companies with laying hens. It was striking that the number of farms with laying hens decreased in the period 2011-2015, but the population of laying hens increased by 7 percent.
The top 5
The municipality of Ede leads the list. In 2016, that municipality had 101 companies with laying hens. However, a considerable decrease is visible compared to 2011. At that time, the municipality still had 131 companies with laying hens. That is a drop of 23 percent. That decrease did not start in 2016, because in 2015 the municipality had 103 companies. Relatively speaking, the decrease is therefore not too bad.
The second place is taken by the municipality of Barneveld. In 2016, that municipality had 79 companies with laying hens. Compared to 2011, there is also a significant decrease. In the period 2011-2016, the municipality submitted 13 companies. That equates to a decrease of 14 percent.
The municipality of Venray comes in third place. In 2016, that municipality had 35 companies with laying hens. In 2011, this was still 39 companies. That's a 10 percent drop. However, compared to 2015, the municipality has endured a growth. At that time there were 33 companies with laying hens.
In fourth place comes the municipality of Nederweert with 33 companies. In 2011, this municipality still had 37 companies, a decrease of 11 percent. In 2015, there were 29 companies with laying hens in Nederweert. This means that an increase has also started here.
The fifth place is filled by the municipality of Leudal with 23 companies. In 2011, that municipality still had 27 companies with laying hens. In 2015, that number dropped to 22 companies. Subsequently, this increased slightly again in 2016.
The biggest changes
The most striking, and also the largest, mutation can be seen in the municipality of Putten. There, the number of companies with laying hens fell by 35 percent compared to 2011. In that year the municipality still had 20 companies, but in 2016 that number has fallen to 13 companies. Putten still had 2015 companies in 18, so the largest decrease occurred in 2016.
An opposite, but striking, mutation is visible in the municipality of Renswoude. That municipality (as one of the few) showed an increase. This is an increase of 23 percent. In 2011, the municipality had 13 companies and in 2016 this number increased to 16 companies with laying hens.
