15 July 2017 - Kimberly Bakker - 4 comments

In the Netherlands we have 1.971 farms with piglets. The average number of piglets per farm is 2.839. This means that there are 5.595.261 piglets in the Netherlands. But in which municipality do we find the most piglets? That gives a new top 5 of Boerenbusiness, compiled by CBS, answer to.

In 2009 the municipality of Berkelland was still standing the first place with 131.061 piglets. In 2014, the municipality ceded that place to the municipality of Venray. At the time, that municipality had 272.151 piglets. Will Venray also top the list in 2016?

Who are in the top 5?
Indeed, the municipality of Venray, Limburg, remains at the top of the list. There are a total of 78 farms with piglets in Venray. This results in a total of 272.183 piglets, a small change compared to 2014. On average, a company in Venray has 3.490 piglets.

In addition, 3,9% of all farms with piglets are located in Venray. And 4,8% of all piglets in the Netherlands can be found in the municipality of Venray. The municipality is therefore head and shoulders above the rest.

The silver medal is for the municipality of Bernheze, North Brabant. 59 farms with piglets can be found in that municipality. This brings the total number of piglets to 194.620. That makes an average of 3.299 piglets per farm. Bernheze is home to 2,6% of the total number of farms with piglets. And 3,4% of all piglets can be found in this municipality.

The lowest step of the podium is completed by the municipality of Gemert-Bakel, North Brabant. There you will find 53 farms and a total of 190.060 piglets. The average number of piglets per farm is 3.586. If we compare this municipality with the totals in the Netherlands, we see that 2,6% of all companies are located in Gemert-Bakel. In addition, 3,4% of the total number of piglets is located in this municipality.

Who's just next to the podium?
In fourth place comes the municipality of Sint-Anthonis, North Brabant. There are 43 farms in that municipality with a total of 170.663 piglets. On average there are 3.969 piglets on a farm in this municipality. About 2,1% of all companies in the Netherlands can be found in this municipality. The number of piglets is somewhat higher, namely 3% of all piglets in the Netherlands are found here.

The end of this top 5 is the municipality of Deurne, North Brabant. There are 53 farms with piglets in that municipality. This results in a total of 168.468 piglets and an average of 3.179 piglets per farm.

Of all farms with piglets in the Netherlands, 2,6% is located in the municipality of Deurne. 3% of all piglets in the Netherlands are also found here.

The bottom of the list
The municipality of Overbetuwe, Gelderland, is clearly at the bottom of the list. In that municipality there are 10 farms with piglets. These farms yield a total of 7.284 piglets. And that in turn yields an average of 728 piglets per farm. Only 0,13% of all piglets are found in this municipality.

In Bronckhorst, Gelderland, there are relatively many farms, namely 25. However, here the percentage of piglets per farm is considerably lower, namely 1.511. That's one of the lowest numbers on the list. This municipality contains 0,67% of all piglets in the Netherlands.

Several municipal reclassifications took place between 2011 and 2016. For the determination of regional changes, the corresponding 2011 municipal codes were used for the 2016 data.

boerenbusiness must stop publishing these kinds of lists, they are not correct at all.
if I live in Venray but also keep pigs that are in Deurne, I give them to my home address with the May count, because they do not ask where these animals are housed. there are entrepreneurs who own more and more locations and this group is only growing. so as long as they don't change this you should stop doing this!!

the top 7 are therefore all municipalities in Brabant. Accidentally?
Daan 17 July 2017
@Harrie, see comment from @boer, because CBS does this, it also seems that the pig population is growing in East Brabant, while in reality it is decreasing. In the province of Zeeland, for example, there would be about 40.000 pigs in total, while this is at least double, but all owners who have a home address in Brabant, Limburg. So no ball.

... Venray is located in Limburg...

after Adriaan Straathof moves to Veghel, the numbers have suddenly increased significantly...

It is better to say where the farmers with the most piglets or pigs live.
