The cultivation of vegetables in the open ground takes up more and more agricultural and horticultural land. Statistics Netherlands reported this on Friday 28 July. But which vegetables are grown the most? That gives a new top 5 of Boerenbusiness, compiled by CBS, answer to. 

On April 1, 2017, vegetables were grown on nearly 87.000 hectares. That is 13% more than in 2016. If we compare this with the year 2000, there is even a growth of 27%.

The vegetable that is head and shoulders above the list is the onion. In 2017, the acreage amounted to 34.930 hectares. That is no less than 40% of the total area of ​​open field vegetables. 

This vegetable is followed by the winter carrot. This vegetable takes up 7,5% of the total acreage, resulting in an acreage of 6.510 hectares. 

Asparagus is on the lowest step of the podium. In 2017, this vegetable filled up 3.820 hectares of the total area of ​​open-field vegetables. This means that this vegetable accounts for approximately 4,5% of the total acreage.

In fourth place is the vegetable: chicory root. This vegetable was found on 2017 hectares in the country in 3.220. This means that about 3,7% of the total area of ​​open field vegetables consists of chicory root.
