Where are the largest pig farms located?

There are 4.508 farms with pigs in the Netherlands. Of that total, there are 736 farms that have more than 5.000 pigs. But which municipality has the most farms with more than 5.000 pigs? That gives a new top 5 of Boerenbusiness, compiled by CBS, answer to. 

The above data shows that 16,3% of all pig farms in the Netherlands have more than 5.000 pigs. However, which municipality in the Netherlands has the largest share in this?

The top 3
The municipality of Venray (Limburg) is head and shoulders at the top of the list. This municipality has a total of 117 pig farms. Of these, 49 farms have more than 5.000 pigs. This means that 41,8% of the pig farms in Venray have more than 5.000 pigs. 

The silver medal goes to the municipality of Reusel-De Mierden (North Brabant). There are 54 pig farms in these municipalities. Of those 54 farms, 22 farms have more than 5.000 pigs. This means that 40,7% of the companies in Reusel-De Mierden have more than 5.000 pigs. 

The municipality of Someren (North Brabant) comes in third place. This municipality has a total of 43 pig farms. Of that number, 17 farms have more than 5.000 pigs. This means that 39,5% of all farms in that municipality have more than 5.000 pigs on the farm. 

Numbers 4 and 5
The municipality of Nederweert (Limburg) falls just short of the podium. There are 40 pig farms in the municipality and 15 of them have more than 5.000 pigs. This means that 37,5% of all pig farms in that municipality have more than 5.000 pigs on the farm. 

In fifth and last place is the municipality of Asten (North Brabant). There are 43 pig farms in that municipality. Of that total number, 15 farms have 5.000 pigs or more. This means that 34,8% of the companies in Asten 

Striking
The first thing that strikes you is that the municipality of Deurne (North Brabant) has the most pig farms. So one would expect that municipality also has quite a number of farms with 5.000 pigs or more. However, appearances are deceiving. The municipality has only 25 farms with at least 5.000 pigs. This means that 20,8% of the pig farms in Deurne have more than 5.000 pigs. 

At the bottom of the list we find the municipality of Hof van Twente (Overijssel). That municipality has 96 pig farms in the municipality, and on that basis comes in fourth place. However, the municipality has only 12 farms with more than 5.000 pigs. That makes for a percentage of 12,5%. As a result, the municipality still falls to last place.
