In which municipality are the most organic farms located?

The Agricultural Census of Statistics Netherlands shows that there were 2017 agricultural companies in the Netherlands in 54.830. Of that number, 1.687 companies are organic. But in which municipality do we find the most organic companies? That gives a new top 5 of Boerenbusiness, compiled by CBS, answer to.

The total number of agricultural companies decreased in 2017. In 2016, there were still 55.681. However, what is striking is that the number of organic farms has increased (1.423 companies in 2016† Are the same municipalities still at the top of the list?

The gold medal
At the top of the list is the municipality of Dronten (Flevoland). She keeps her first place. In 2017, the municipality will have 81 organic farms; In total, the municipality has 433 agricultural companies. In 2016, the number of organic farms here was lower, at 61.

In second place is the municipality of Ede (Gelderland). This municipality also maintains the same position. In 2016, this municipality had 722 agricultural businesses, 53 of which were organic. In 2017, the number of farms fell to 700, but the number of organic farms increased to 64.

In third place, and also lowest step of the podium, is the municipality of Barneveld (Gelderland). Compared to 2016, this municipality has risen one position. In 2017, the number of agricultural companies will be 550, of which 63 companies will produce organically. In 2016, this was 556 farms, of which only 48 were organic.

Just next to the boat
The municipality of Noordoostpolder (Flevoland) has fallen off the podium in 1 year. This municipality was in third place in 2016 with 50 organic companies. This increased to 2017 companies in 59. However, this increase was not as strong as for the municipalities in the top 3.

In fifth place comes the municipality of Lelystad (Flevoland). This municipality was also in fifth place in 2016. In 2016, there were 126 agricultural companies in Lelystad, 27 of which were organic. In 2017, the number of farms increased to 129 and the number of organic farms to 33.

What stands out?
The municipality of Renswoude (Utrecht) has a relatively large number of organic farms. The total number of agricultural companies in that municipality is 78, of which 11 companies are organic. That is 1 company more than last year.

The municipality of Deurne (North Brabant) has relatively few organic farms. There are 331 agricultural companies in this municipality. However, only 2 of these are organic.
