Where is the acreage of Brussels sprouts largest?

In 2011, 2.917 hectares of agricultural land in the Netherlands was used to grow Brussels sprouts. That has fallen to 5 hectares in 2.606 years. But in which municipality was the acreage of Brussels sprouts the largest in 2016? A new top 5, compiled by Statistics Netherlands, provides the answer.

The average area of ​​Brussels sprouts in 2011 was 12 hectares. In 2016 this increased to 13 hectares. It is striking that this has increased, because the total acreage shows a decrease (-10%).

Who heads the list?
The gold medal goes to the municipality of Zeewolde (Flevoland). Brussels sprouts were grown on 2016 hectares in this municipality in 314. However, that is 7,5% (26 hectares) lower than in 2011. When the Brussels sprouts area was 340 hectares. On average, Brussels sprouts were grown on 2016 hectares per company in 22, compared to 2011 hectares per company in 26.

In second place comes the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee (South Holland). In 2011, Brussels sprouts were grown on 147 hectares in this municipality. In 2016, that number rose sharply to 226 hectares (+53,6%). However, the average acreage per company did decrease: from 11 hectares in 2011 to 10 hectares in 2016. This means that more companies have started growing Brussels sprouts.

The lowest step of the podium is for the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland (Zeeland). In 2011, Brussels sprouts were grown on 288 hectares in this municipality. That number has fallen for 5 years to 213 hectares in 2016. This is a decrease of 75 hectares, or 26%. The average per company has also decreased significantly. In 2011, the average was 19 hectares, but in 2016 it was only 12 hectares.

In fourth place is the municipality of Binnenmaas (South Holland). In this municipality the acreage of Brussels sprouts has decreased by 5% in 26 years. In 2011, the acreage amounted to 229 hectares. That fell to 2016 hectares in 169, a decrease of 60 hectares. The average area per farm has increased: from 15 hectares in 2011 to 19 hectares in 2016.

In last place of this top 5 is the municipality of Zuidplas (South Holland). In 2011, the acreage of Brussels sprouts in this municipality amounted to 126 hectares. That number increased slightly in 2016 to 140 hectares. That is an increase of 11%. However, the average area per farm has remained the same: 16 hectares.

What stands out?
The municipality of Lelystad (Flevoland) shows by far the largest percentage increase: 426,4%. The area of ​​Brussels sprouts increased by 5 hectares in 104 years: from 24 hectares in 2011 to 128 hectares in 2016. The average area per company in this municipality increased from 12 hectares to 26 hectares.

The municipality of Hellevoetsluis (South Holland) shows one of the largest decreases in percentage terms. The acreage of Brussels sprouts in this municipality decreased by 5% in 88,8 years. This brings the acreage in 2016 to 2 hectares. In 2011, that was still 19 hectares. The average acreage in 2016 amounts to 2 hectares, which brings the number of companies to 1.

The largest decrease is for the municipality of Roosendaal (North Brabant). In this municipality the acreage of Brussels sprouts decreased by 91,8%. In 2011, Brussels sprouts were grown on 115 hectares in this municipality. That fell to 2016 hectares in 9. The average per company decreased from 38 hectares to 9 hectares. That means that there is only 1 company left.
